Police Launch Manhunt For 47-Year Old Modupe Adebowale For Alleged Bisexual Activity

The Lagos State Police Command has launched manhunt for one Oluwaseyi Modupe Adebowale, 47, for her involvement in bisexual activity with one Abodunrin Bukola, 45, who is currently assisting with investigations.

In a statement released by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force, Lagos Command, Bukola was apprehended by the special crack team of the Nigerian Police during a raid on a popular bar in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Saturday, 4th May, 2024 alongside other LGBTQ suspects who during the raid, ‘were caught engaging in acts that are likely to cause breach of public peace’.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, during a press briefing with newsmen on the arrest, said that his men relied on an intelligence that the night club where Bukola and other syndicates were apprehended had become a den for suspected lesbians where their activities contravenes Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 and if found guilty, could face up to 14 years in prison.

“On interrogation, one of the arrested suspects, Bukola confessed to the criminal investigative department that she had been in the same sex relationship for almost 6 years alongside her partner, Oluwaseyi Modupe Adebowale, who is currently at large”.

On whether she was aware that their act contravenes the provision of the Nigerian constitution prohibiting same sex relationship, she said she was aware, more reason why they have kept their relationship status away from public glare and they have also gone ahead to marry an opposite sex in order not to leave any traces.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin said that other suspects have also owned up to the crime and would be arraigned on Monday 13th May, 2024 while assuring that Modupe and others who have evaded Police arrest would definitely be tracked and brought to book, if found guilty.

Recall that the Director of Amnesty International in Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, during a raid on over 70 gay party attendees in Gombe sometimes in 2023; condemned the activity of men of Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps for their discrimination and arrest of lawful Nigerians.

“We unreservedly condemn these blatantly discriminatory arrests and call for the immediate release of all involved.  

“The Nigerian authorities must stop these humiliating raids and misusing laws to harass and arrest people accused of same-sex activity. It is appalling that the police can arbitrarily bring criminal charges against people based on judgements of how they are dressed or how they have styled their hair. 

“No one should be targeted and arrested because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity. The Nigeria Police should be prioritizing keeping everyone safe, not stoking more discrimination.”
